The Divergent Series: The Books

 Hey guys!

So this week I'm starting a new series that is going to run all week. As you may have noticed around the bloggersphere - thanks to the new make-up Palette from Sephora and the endless amount of competitions to win tickets to the European premier floating around blogs over the past week - there is a new "cult" movie coming out, Divergent. It has already been released last week over in the US (on March 21st) and is due to be released over here in the UK next week (April 4th) so I decided, the week between the two who be the perfect time to do a series!

Now, I really do hate to be one of those "I knew it before it was famous" type of people. But I have loved the books for over a year now, so when people who say they love the film when they have only seen the trailer (yes, I have seen people do this!) and or don't even know about the books after declaring they are big fans of the series it really grinds on me. So, I bring you this series, over the next week I will be posting make-up looks from this book and the factions that feature in the book (I will explain what they are shortly), so expect a post every day this week - starting with the books!

And in my opinion, the books are - and this is always the case - better than the film.

There are 3 books in the series, Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant. You may not be aware but Summit Entertainment (the company who have the rights to the film) also have rights for the next two books in the triology. Insurgent has an estimated release date of March 15th, 2015 and Allegiant has an estimated release date of March 18th, 2016.

I knew I was going to be a huge fan of the series when I managed to read the first book (Divergent) in the space of 48 hours and that's a personal record for me! (the next quickest read was The Hunger Games which I read in just under 72 hours). So when I finished it as quickly as I did, I knew I was on to a winner and that I was going to love this series, I quickly bought the next book (Insurgent) as soon as I finished the first. But then I had a problem, I had to wait until October 2013 to read the next book in the series (Allegiant) as it hadn't been released. But I managed to pre-order it and picked it up on release day.

So let's have a look at each book and I will explain the faction system in which the make-up looks are going to based upon.

"Set in a futuristic dystopia where society is divided into five factions that each represent a different virtue, teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another - for the rest of their lives. Tris Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone. Then Tris and her fellow faction-members have to live through a highly competitive initiation process to live out the choice they have made. They must undergo extreme physical and intense psychological tests, that transform them all. But Tris has a secret that she is Divergent, which means she doesn't fit into any one group. If anyone knew, it would mean a certain death. As she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, this secret might help her save the people she loves... or it might destroy her." - taken from IMDB.

When you turn 16, you are required to take an apitutude test to determine which faction you belong in. This test requires you to go into a mirrored room and sit in a chair in the center of the room. You are then given a serum to drink, which connects you to a stimulation program. The stimulation then provides a series of scenarios and depends on the choices you make, will tell you which faction you are most suited for. If you fit into more than one faction, you are considered Divergent.

Now, I think it's important to explain the factions and what they mean. Society has been split into 5 groups, also known as factions. Each of these factions represent a different virtue, and are each trying to develop a quality or skill.

The virtue that Erudite values is knowledge. Erudite was formed by those who blamed human ignorance for the faults of society. They formed Erudite as a way of eliminating ignorance and darkness from the human minds. People who are in the Erudite faction are in constant pursuit of knowledge.
The Erudite faction produce the most Librarians, Doctors, Scientists and teachers. Members of Erudite wear a item of blue clothing at all times, they believe this is a calming colour that helps stimulate the brain.

The virtue that Candor values is Honesty. Candor was formed by those who blamed human ignorance on duplicity and deception. They believed dishonesty is the key fault in human nature which began evil and war. They believed honest and openness would lead to a more peaceful and perfect society.
People who are in the Candor faction wear black and white clothing because they see the truth as either black or white. The Candor faction provide the most leaders in law.

The virtue that Abnegation values is Selflessness. Abnegation was formed by those who believed selfishness for human natures errors. They believe in selfless actions and attaining peace through the elimination of selfishness. By doing so, they choose to completely forget themselves and only serve others. Members of Abnegation only look in a mirror when they get a hair cut - the second day of every third month.
Members of the Abnegation faction wear grey, simple clothing and the only accessory is a plain watch.  Abnegation provide the leaders to the
city thanks to their selflessness.

The virtue that Dauntless value is bravery. Dauntless was formed by those who blamed cowardice for societies problems. The only answer is to fight your fears and find bravery. Dauntless are the cities soldiers and are in charge of security and they are there to protect the citizens. The majority of Dauntless have tattoos and piercings, and they always wear black clothing. They are the only faction to use the train and jump in and out of it whilst it is moving.

Amity is the faction that dislikes war. Amity was formed by those who wanted a peaceful society, free from conflict and war. Amity is a peaceful faction and are democratic - voting on everything. Members of Amity wear red and yellow clothing, less strict than other factions as long as it is bright and pleasant. Amity run the farms and provide the food for the other factions. They tend to be counselors, caretakers and artists.

I will also be doing a make-up look on the factionless - you are made factionless if you fail to complete initiation into one of the factions or if you don't agree with the views of your chosen faction. The factionless live in poverty, and discomfort. They are described as being homeless and have very undesirable jobs.

However, rarely, someone may be Divergent. This is when you fit into more than one category/faction. Being Divergent is considered dangerous, and a threat to the system of factions. Divergent minds cannot be controlled therefore the leaders are terrified of what a Divergent can do, and see them as a threat. Most o the people who are factionless are Divergent as they cannot only have one way of thinking.

"Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so." - taken from Amazon

"The faction based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered - fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she's known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris's new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature - and of herself - while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love." - taken from Divergent Wiki
